For those Squadron veterans involved with this website there has always been a certain amount of mixed feeling about the "claimed" accuracy of some models produced of 198 Squadron's Hawker Typhoons, especially those portrayed with red squadron code letters that are said to have been used during July/August 1944, something which none of the veterans from the Squadron have any recollection of.
During 2007 a Mr David Walker contacted us with an original full-plate black and white photograph of 198's TP.A - MN951, the aircraft of Flt/Lt Denis Sweeting DFC, RAFVR who had the engine's starboard cowling personally inscribed "The Uninvited". Those of you who may have read Flt/Lt Sweeting's book "Wings of Chance", now regrettably out of print, may recall that the photograph, thought to have been taken around October 1944, appears on one of its pages. However, what this website was not expecting from David was that he would use it to form the basis of what appears to be an accurate looking representation of TP.A - MN951.
Shown on the right is the original 1944 photograph, at top, while underneath are some of those showing the progress of the model towards its final completion.
Regrettably, as so often happens these days, the sad aspect of it all is that Flt/Lt Denis Sweeting died in 1996 and therefore did not live to see David Walker's tribute to him and his aircraft.
